In the next step along my journey of preparing myself for the complicated quilt pattern, I decided to make the Ultimate Beginner Quilt pattern from Fat Quarter Shop. It uses fat quarters, it has written instructions and videos, it shows you a few different styles of quilt blocks…. I thought it would be good practice.
I bought a bundle of Batik fat quarters, I bought some yardage of a couple of different colours for the sashing, then I dived right in cutting up all my fabric into the pieces needed.

(I tried to keep myself organized by labeling the pieces with each block number they go with)
Once I started piecing them together…… I started wondering if I had made a horrible mistake, or the fabric embodiment of visual vomit.

Once they were all pieced together, I added the sashing and borders….. and actually it improved matters greatly!

It still is giving “wild 80s windbreaker vibes” according to my friend Victoria, but much less offensive on the eyes.
I quilted it with wiggly diagonal lines, and bound it using the machine method.

…and you know? Actually I don’t hate it. It was a great exercise in lots of different piecing methods, and cutting and sewing with precision.
My bestie is a big fan of colour and wild patterns and so she has called dibs – it will be winging it’s way across the pond pretty soon 😉
