Adventureland Quilt

For people who like to make things, sometimes you wind up with… well, a lot of stuff. (Exhibit A: my husband’s growing collection of 3D printed tat) But what could you do if you want to keep making things? What if you want to practice a new skill, like quilt piecing, quilting, and binding in preparation for one day tackling that pile of fabric in the corner that seems a bit out of your league? Let’s be real, you don’t need to make a quilt for everyone you know.

DONATE THEM!

This year, once again, there is a quilt donation drive happening for Comfort Cases, organized by Stacey Lee Creative. You can find all the details here. They request quilts of sizes: Big Kids: 50″ x 50″ (slight variations accepted); and Baby Quilts: 30″ x 40″ (slight variations accepted).

I decided to make an Adventureland Quilt by Suzy Quilts. Originally I was going to make the throw size, suitable for a Big Kid donation, but I went the Jelly Roll route and….. ran into issues.

Defective Jelly Roll

Issues being that one of my strips was only 2″ wide instead of 2.5″, and another strip had weird missing edges at either end. Ummm thanks Freespirit? So I had to pivot, I no longer had enough strips for a throw sized without doing some creative piecing, so I just decided to make the baby sized quilt instead. The finished size is 42″ square, which still is in line with the Baby Quilt size.

I used a Tula Pink Jelly Roll for the strips, and some white cotton flannel for the background fabric, the batting is Quilter’s Dream Cotton, backing is more of my super wide Joann flannel that keeps on giving, and I used some of the remaining Jelly Roll strips for the binding. I kept the quilting simple, just echoing the piecing on the strips with some 2″ quilted lines on the background, again echoing the piecing.

It came out cute!

The deadline for quilt submission to the donation drive is May 31st, so plenty of time left to get making!
