A tale of two cakes…

On days where I don’t make things, I should probably tackle the pile of things I always wanted to tell the story of but never did…. so here goes:

It was my friend Jemma’s birthday, as a surprise I decided to make her a cake. She likes pretty things, Disney, and the colour yellow… what else could a I do but revisit the staple of birthdays for girls everywhere… the Princess cake.

I did contemplate buying the specific Wilton Wonder Mould pan, but didn’t know just how many I would actually have occasion to produce, so used a standard Pyrex bowl to bake the cake in instead. The size of the cake means that the edges start to overlook slightly before the middle is done, the Wilton pan has a central heat conducting rod to get around this, so I trimmed it slightly. This also gave the dress a slightly more realistic shape! The doll was a cheap one:

I took off her legs, poor thing:

and prepared the cake accordingly:

then covered it, and her, in yellow icing:

Next I added some flowers and piped dots….

And then she was done!

My friend loved the cake, as did her boyfriend, which caused him to joke that he wanted one… but a tank. Little did he think we would remember, he had in fact forgotten about it by the time his birthday rolled around, but the seed had been planted….

First the doll…

Then the cakes were baked ready to carve… for this cake I made a marble cake, with chocolate and vanilla coloured green….

Then carved into shape….

Covered in icing…

Then I built up layers of camouflage…

Then my HM Armed Forces man came with an Anti-tank javelin launcher…. I put it to good use in the finished cake…..

I loved the way it turned out… not perfect, not smooth, but fun, and how many cakes can you fire missiles from? 😉

So the second cake was another surprise one… and a success! Onwards and upwards!
